What did we hear at the Finnish Satellite Workshop?

DA-Group participated in the Finnish Satellite workshop in the exhibition area and Mikko Kärkkäinen from DA-Group gave a presentation on AWS and CIMR satellites. The event took place on 18-20 January 2023, at Dipoli, Aalto University, Espoo, Finland.

Mikko Kärkkäinen told about the technology used for weather forecasting. Precise water vapour and temperature profile data is needed for accurate forecasting of the weather. This kind of data can be obtained with a microwave radiometric receiver, which accurately observes the noise temperatures at different bands. Moreover, frequent observations from multiple locations can be obtained by using measurement data from instruments onboard satellites orbiting the Earth. European Space Agency (ESA) has the Arctic Weather Satellite (AWS) and Copernicus Imaging Microwave Radiometer (CIMR) missions, which use radiometric receivers to provide information on the atmosphere of the Earth and DA-Group will provide some of the key sub-assemblies to these missions.

At the Finnish Satellite Workshop, we heard about an interesting space sector project that is about to get underway. "The Kvarken Space Eco", led by the University of Vaasa, is a project that aims to create an innovation ecosystem in the Kvarken region that will enable the region to benefit from space-based knowledge. Funded by the European Union's Regional Development Fund through the Interreg Botnia-Atlantica programme, the project is a collaboration between 10 universities and research institutes on both sides of the Kvarken. - Through this project, we want to put the Ostrobothnia and Västerbotten in Sweden at the forefront of the new space economy. We will create an innovation centre for space knowledge in the region, the Kvarken Space Center, which will provide and process knowledge that can be used by residents, companies, educational institutions and other actors in the region," says Professor Heidi Kuusniemi, who is leading the project.
